Ants are social insects that live in large colonies and are highly successful due to their organization. In nature, they perform useful functions such as soil aeration and waste degradation. However, they become problematic when they invade homes and infest sugar or protein-rich foods, or loosen paving stones in the garden and encourage aphid infestation. The black garden ant (Lasius niger) is particularly common in Germany.
